Elementary Education Curriculum

A curriculum plan should consider the major, college core, professional education, and state certification requirements.

The coursework to qualify for education certification consists of:

Education Sequence (9 course units)

  • ELE 099: College Seminar
  • BIO 104: Inquiries in the Life Sciences
  • MAT 105: Mathematical Structures
  • MAT 106: Algorithms for Educators I or II
  • PHY 103: Physical, Earth, and Space Sciences
  • RAL 225: Children’s Literature
  • ELE 201: Child and Adolescent Development
  • MST 202: Science Health and the Environment
  • MTT 202: Teaching Mathematics
  • RAL 221: Literacy, Math, Science, and Social Studies methods

Advanced Core Block (3 course units)

  • SOM 203: Methods of Teaching Social Studies from a Multicultural Perspective
  • ELE 301: Advanced Core Block
  • RAL 321: Literature Learning Across Curriculum

Note: These courses must be completed concurrently in the semester opposite Methods Courses.

Senior Student Teaching (2 course units)

  • ELE 490: Student Teaching
  • ELE 498: Capstone: Inquiry into Learning

Note:  These courses must be completed concurrently. You must have a 2.75 GPA to student teach.
